Knee and Joint Pain Treatments in About 5 Minutes!

The great news is that viscosupplementation can be successfully administered in about five minutes – during a regular office visit. And after the procedure, you are free to return to your normal workday or other activities.

When you visit Louisville Medical Center, you can count on individual care and custom treatment plans. Our goal is to continue to care for you, strengthen your physical abilities, and rehabilitate and restore both your physical and mental health.

What Is Viscosupplementation?

Viscosupplementation is an FDA-approved medical technique. During the convenient procedure, your doctor will inject a thick lubricating fluid into your affected joint. The fluid contains hyaluronic acid, or hyaluronan, which is similar to a substance called synovial fluid that naturally occurs in your body. Typically someone suffering from joint pain has experienced a loss of this fluid in the painful joint. So moving the joint becomes painful, and sometimes excruciating.

The hyaluronic acid used in viscosupplementation is similar to a substance that occurs naturally in the joints. By reintroducing this fluid into the joint, your pain can be alleviated long-term – for up to six months! And your joint will be able to move with more ease and function. Hyaluronic acid injection is used to treat knee pain caused by osteoarthritis (OA) in patients who have already used over-the-counter pain relievers (e.g., ibuprophen, acetaminophen, etc.) without success.

Long-Term Osteoarthritis and Knee Pain Relief

Viscosupplementation is most frequently used to remedy symptoms of knee pain and osteoarthritis. A more natural, nonsurgical treatment method, viscosupplementation conveniently treats joint damage quickly and easily during an office visit. You’ll experience up to six months of relief from osteoarthritis or other joint pain. Plus you’ll avoid the expense, recovery, and downtime of invasive surgery or extended use of prescription medications.

Your specific health issue and degree of pain will determine your course of treatment and the number of required injections. Although viscosupplementation has relieved pain in so many patients suffering with joint discomfort and dysfunction, it is typically reserved as a treatment option after other methods have been exhausted.

Do You Have Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease with constant pain in the knees. Unlike conditions or injuries that may cause temporary pain and inflammation, osteoarthritis is caused by an overactive immune system.

Osteoarthritis typically affects the cartilage in the knee. Cartilage is an elastic-like tissue that covers the ends of the bones in your joints. Normal cartilage allows bones to move with ease and absorb impacts to deter bone breakage. The knee joint also contains synovial fluid that also helps to cushion the joint, reduce friction, and provide lubrication.

When osteoarthritis occurs, the cartilage breaks down and wears away. In addition, the synovial fluid loses its ability to lubricate the knee. This combination of dysfunction creates pain and stiffness, limited joint movement, and joint inflammation.

It’s important to note that viscosupplementation will not cure your joint condition. And there is no cure for osteoarthritis. Viscosupplementation treatment is meant to extend pain-free periods and help patients avoid the use or overuse of over-the-counter and prescription pain medications.

Not all patients experience the same degree of pain relief through viscosupplementation therapy. And some patients will experience pain relief sooner than others. However, most patients report the greatest pain relief approximately eight to 12 weeks after their initial treatment. In addition, the length of pain relief can vary from patient to patient. Some patients have reported beneficial pain relief lasting for more than 6 months following the prescribed series of injections.
